A Summer Wonderland

For Summer 23’, Genes, a ready-to-wear Indo-French brand from the house of Lecoanet Hemant, takes on an animated avatar.
Think fantastical wonderscapes, mixing art and popular culture tropes. Vivid colours and imaginative forms weave a story of adventure. With ‘A Summer Wonderland’ collection, Genes continues its rendezvous with art and tries to tap into that zest for life. The collection is a nod to the inimitable voices of two artistic visionaries; Carlos Cruz-Diez, a pioneering Venezuelan artist in the field of 20th century optical art, and Takashi Murakami, a Japanese contemporary artist known for his two-dimensional style that straddles between fine art and pop culture. The distinct Genes style shines through the interpretation of these artistic influences, setting the tone for a vivacious summer.
The palette comprises soft tones of lilac and rose set against the most vibrant lime green, berry blue, tangerine orange and orchid pink. There is a reduced simplicity to the hues owing to the underlying influence of the Bauhaus art movement and distinctive colour-pop palette of Takashi’s work. What stands out is a deftly curated language of prints. Florals remain central to the collection albeit seen through a whimsical lens. Takashi’s love for the quintessentially Japanese pop graphics echoes through superflat flowers delicately printed on classic poplins. His witty floral signature plays inspiration for a 3D embroidery treatment elevated by large sequins and cut-out technique. It is all fun and frolic but pillared on immaculate tailoring.
The works of Diez, heavily influenced by Bauhaus, infuse the collection with an abstract linearity- becoming building blocks of a zippy floral cloud print and guide the season’s stripe story. Bauhaus triangles and circles appear alongside coltish florals and the inimitable Genes logo. Playful collage of florals in black and white & lilac and tangerine comes alive through screen printed hand drawn details.

A Summer Wonderland is immersive in its essence. It attempts to do what all good art does- evoke.
For women, the looks are an eclectic blend of saturated hues and pared down silhouettes. A closer look at the silhouettes reveals an eccentric naivety. Balloon sleeves, oversized pleats and rounded shoulders, all play to the tune of wonder. Tops with rounded tailored slits and voluminous pleats act as a canvas to intricate 3D floral embroidery. Staples like the basic tee and button down are transformed into a print extravaganza- whether it’s the cheerful stripes and floral print on a jersey t-shirt or the singular orange brush stroke print on a crisp poplin shirt. A flowy shirt dress, perfectly tailored in white cotton poplin and embroidered with floral cut-outs, embodies a certain restraint and highlights construction. Superimposed florals in yellow and black create an optically charged impression on butter yellow satin slip dress and shirt. The ombre printed linen co-ord suit steals the show, a powerful statement in orchid pink and orange.
The Genes man too takes on an artistic tone for the season. An all over 3D printed lime green shirt makes for a sartorial choice. The soul of summer runs in abundance throughout the collection. From floral printed sailor collar shirts to abstract stroked kurtas, the clothes have an undeniable quirk. Multicoloured stripes seep in through jackets and pleated trousers crafted in yarn dyed cotton. An organic confluence of stripes and florals appears on a full sleeved shirt. Oversized artistic flowers, in black and white, are printed in a seamless ombre, over linen bomber jackets and trousers. The classic band collar is accentuated by white on white 3D floral treatment in a cotton must have shirt. A colour-pop floral print featuring all the colours of the season looks riotous on poplin shirts and t-shirts, like a wild summer dream.
The clothes are exuberant but always aligned with the Genes syntax. Individualistic and expressive, A Summer Wonderland is immersive in its essence. It attempts to do what all good art does- evoke.
